Calculation of the ventilation system for the growing room

Tables for chambers for growing oyster mushrooms with a load of 1 to 8 tons of substrate, in which the calculation is made:

  • what should be the power of the blower fan and exhaust fan,
  • diameters of fresh air and recirculation pipes,
  • sectional area of pipes, for square and rectangular tin ducts,
  • diameter of film polyethylene air ducts and plastic cups.

In the figure below you can see what this table looks like.

Two tables with ventilation calculations plus instructions

You do not need to know the formulas for calculating ventilation, in the tables you will find ready-made answers.

Upon payment, you will receive tables:

1. for the central air duct with nozzles-cups

The table is applicable for narrow chambers, not more than 6 meters wide.

ventilation for oyster mushroom

2. for central air duct with side film air ducts

The table is compiled in the same way as the previous one, but there is a small calculator for calculating the diameter of the nozzles-cups, depending on the length of the air ducts.

You substitute the total number of cups - the text provides step-by-step instructions on how to count them and what distance should be between the air supply nozzles. And the calculator calculates the required diameter.

To properly equip a room for growing mushrooms, you need equipment.

Therefore, instructions for calculation are attached to the tables:

  • the required heat exchanger,
  • exhaust fan or gravity shutters,
  • the total load of the growing room with the substrate - capacity depending on the area of the room.

The cost of two tables and instructions is $70

Ventilation in small grow rooms

To create a microclimate, we must make an interconnected system, with a climate chamber, where air flows are mixed, heated and humidified. Ventilation only distributes them evenly throughout the volume of the growing room.

In my instructions you will find all the necessary information for the competent installation of the ventilation system.

Instruction content:
  • describes the sequence of placement of elements of the climate system,
  • there is a ventilation scheme to properly organize the movement of air in the room,
  • the question was considered - at what distance from the floor should air ducts be located in the oyster mushroom chamber,
  • how does the height of the ceiling affect the arrangement of the blocks,
  • photo of gate valves and rules for working with them,
  • photo of the humidification chamber,
  • it is told how to calculate the hood in the mushroom chamber and select the exhaust fan and gravity shutters,
  • how to make a ventilation system for growing mushrooms.

I described how to count bags in blocks and tons, if the rows are single and double, arranged in tiers.

For example, I took a growing chamber 8 by 5 meters so that you can clearly see how you can calculate the blocks for the size of your room.

I calculated by loading blocks that have a diameter of 22 cm and a weight of 9-11 kg. If you have blocks of other sizes, you can calculate them too using this method.

How to calculate the number of oyster mushroom blocks per growing chamber area

Rows can be single when they contain blocks with cuts on two opposite sides of the package.
You can place the maximum number of mushroom blocks in double rows, with one-sided perforation. Holes are cut only on one side, and the other side of the bags are located almost close to each other.
Double rows use a more compact area, but the distance between them must be greater so that the flows freely circulate between the rows of blocks.

The higher the loading of mushroom blocks per square meter, the higher the yield (in terms of unit area), and, accordingly, the income.

Therefore, it is better to equip the premises as expected at the start than to redo it later, having already lost money and time.

To accommodate 8 tons of substrate, the following area is needed:

Ceiling height  Required area, sq.m.
For single rows  For double rows
2,5 m ≈120 ≈90
3-3,5 m 80-90 60-75

To calculate the area more accurately, you need to know:

  • weight of the block,
  • you put an additional rack close to the wall, or leave it free,
  • do you have recirculation and fresh air pipes in the room itself (this requires some free space), or separately in a warm corridor.

My manual says how to calculate it.

Consider which is better:

buy the wrong fan, ruin a couple of batches of mushrooms, buy another fan - maybe wrong again.
or take ready-made instructions from me with all the parameters: this is cheaper than the cost of a fan that does not fit in terms of power.

Do not believe those sites that enthusiastically tell you that you need to do almost nothing, and the money will come quickly and easily.
This does not happen with living organisms: they get sick, many circumstances affect the yield: a banal power outage, a water supply nozzle is clogged, the raw material contains a lot of spores, and after heat treatment you will get a defective substrate.

If someone tells you that the climate is not needed and everything grows like that, ask first where this person grows mushrooms.
If there is a warm basement where the main central heating pipe runs, and you will put the blocks in one row on the floor, then you really do not need climate ventilation. And you can only water the floor.

But, unfortunately, only very few mushroom growers have such conditions.

If the room is small and there are many blocks in it, it will not be possible to provide an optimal microclimate for oyster mushrooms without properly organized ventilation.
